The aftermath of the passage of a 2012 same-sex marriage law in Maryland is examined in "The New Black," recalling the divisiveness that emerged among many African-American ministers over the consequent proposal of a ballot referendum. Filmmaker Yoruba Richen makes the situation the basis for an overall survey of gay rights in the black community. Several clergymen and former NAACP chairman Julian Bond are among the interviewees.
