Vladimir Nabokov's startling novel about middle-aged Prof. Humbert Humbert and his bittersweet pursuit of the nymphet of his dreams probably benefited from director Stanley Kubrick's trademark coolness, which tones down the more salacious aspects of the premise in favor of what often comes close to screwball comedy. James Mason, Sue Lyon and Shelley Winters star; Nabokov wrote the screenplay, which was nominated for an Oscar. The film airs as part of TCM's month-long salute to Winters, who received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance.
