In a world that is increasingly data-driven, filmmaker Shalini Kantayya's critically acclaimed new documentary "Coded Bias" explores the threat to individual civil liberties posed by artificial intelligence. The film follows MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini and other experts from around the world as they fight to expose discrimination inherent in prevalent facial recognition algorithms. Buolamwini was among the first to discover such technology often cannot detect dark-skinned faces with real accuracy. In short, the algorithms are only as unbiased as the humans and historical data programming them.
