In "Young, Gifted and Black," Aretha (Cynthia Erivo) records her 1970 protest album, inspired by the activism of Angela Davis (Brittany Guess) and the Soledad Brothers. Despite Jerry Wexler's (David Cross) skepticism, the record proves successful. Then, in "Amazing Grace," Aretha releases her great 1972 gospel album of that title in New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, despite her siblings' pleas for her to do the record at New Bethel with their father (Courtney B. Vance). In a flashback to 1956, Little Re (Shaian Jordan) records her first album at New Bethel after discovering she is pregnant with her second child.
