One of the most acclaimed dramas of 2016, writer-director Barry Jenkins' piercing come-of-age drama chronicles three stages in the life of its main character, a young Black man named Chiron, played as an adult by Trevante Roberts (Alex Hibbert and Ashton Sanders play Chiron as a child and teenager, respectfully). As a drug dealer who becomes a surrogate father to the boy, Mahershala Ali won an Academy Award as best supporting actor, while Jenkins earned an Oscar for this adapted screenplay. The film itself was named the year's best picture.
