Three Academy Awards, including one for black-and-white cinematography, went to this stunning 1964 film adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel about an earthy Greek laborer (Anthony Quinn) who teaches a staid British heir (Alan Bates) to loosen up and enjoy life. Quinn lost the best actor Oscar to Rex Harrison ("My Fair Lady") but won the role of his life. The drama also stars Irene Papas and Lila Kedrova, who earned the best supporting actress Oscar.
