Games of the XXI Olympiad

TCM | 8:00 pm

In this striking 1977 portrait of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, director Jean-Claude Labrecque — collaborating with fellow filmmakers Jean Beaudin, Marcel Carrière and Georges Dufaux — opted not to present a straightforward chronicle of the Games, but rather to focus on emotion-packed stories of individual athletes, both in competition and out. Thus, instead of the heavily reported triumph of Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, Labrecque follows the story of Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim, who came in second to Comaneci. The film airs as part of TCM's 100 Years of Olympic Films event.
