Released to widespread acclaim, Vincente Minnelli's 1958 film adaptation of a novel by James Jones ("From Here to Eternity") casts Frank Sinatra as Dave Hirsh, a troubled war veteran and author who returns to his Indiana hometown, much to the consternation of his estranged older brother, Frank (Arthur Kennedy, Oscar-nominated as best supporting actor). The film marked the first screen pairing of Sinatra with Dean Martin, as hard-partying gambler Bama Dillert, and Shirley MacLaine earned her first best actress Oscar nomination as a young woman besotted with Dave.
