Filmmaker Elegance Bratton captures a vibrant but highly vulnerable subculture of at-risk youth in New York in his acclaimed documentary "Pier Kids," which follows homeless queer and trans young people of color who hang out at the Christopher Street Pier. Many of them are charming, heartbreakingly genuine and surprisingly eloquent as they talk about their precarious existence in the face of overwhelming homophobia and abuse. Their tenuous situation at least gives them the freedom to forge their own chosen family, however.
