One of Ours

SUNDANCE | 11:00 pm

Filmmaker Yasmine Mathurin's absorbing 2021 documentary explores complicated questions about cultural identity by examining the case of Josiah Wilson, a Black man now in his 20s, who was born in Haiti. He was adopted by a Canadian couple — a white mother and an Indigenous father — who were living in Haiti at the time, eventually bringing him home to Calgary, Alberta. In Canada, Wilson is culturally and legally Indigenous, yet he found himself banned from an all-Native basketball tournament due to rules imposed under colonialism.
