One of the earliest and most influential examples of French New Wave cinema, this 1960 crime drama is regarded as a landmark on two counts: It marked the feature-length debut of writer-director Jean-Luc Godard and represented Jean-Paul Belmondo's electrifying breakthrough as an actor in his role as a wandering criminal named Michel. The actor died last September; this TCM encore kicks off an overnight marathon of films from recently departed artists not previously honored, including "Young Frankenstein" (Cloris Leachman) and "The Group" (Hal Holbrook and Jessica Walter).
