The first performance of an opera by a Black composer in the Metropolitan Opera's history, "Fire Shut Up in My Bones," Grammy winner Terence Blanchard's self-described "opera in jazz," marked a major milestone for the Met when it opened the 2021-22 season last September. Working from a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, adapted from a memoir by journalist Charles M.
